Applications are open for the Jim Leech Mastercard Foundation Fellowship 2027. The free programme supports African students and recent graduates who want to turn business ideas into impact-driven startups.
However, the fellowship is delivered by Queen’s University’s Dunin-Deshpande Innovation Centre, together with partner organisations across Africa.
Jim Leech Fellowship 2027 benefits
Selected participants will receive:
- Free online entrepreneurship training.
- Virtual coaching and guidance.
- Support to develop a business idea.
- Knowledge of startup planning and growth.
- Access to useful networks and resources.
- Financial support linked to the programme.
- Confidence to solve real community problems.
- A chance to move from an early idea toward a startup.
Also, the programme does not charge an application or participation fee. Therefore, eligible applicants can join without paying for the training.
Jim Leech Fellowship 2027 Eligibility criteria
Applicants must:
- Be citizens of an African country.
- Study at a post-secondary institution or have graduated within the past five years.
- Have an entrepreneurial idea or a strong desire to solve a pressing problem.
- Commit to all three programme phases.
- Have reliable internet access.
- Own or access a device for online sessions and assignments.
Also, the programme welcomes applicants who are still developing their ideas. You do not need to have a complete business or previous startup experience.
Programme phases
The fellowship includes three online courses:
Phase one: Explore Entrepreneurship
January to February 2027
Participants will learn the basic ideas behind entrepreneurship and begin exploring possible business solutions.
Phase two: Ignite Entrepreneurship
March to April 2027
Participants will improve their ideas, receive coaching, and show their commitment to building an impact-focused venture.
Phase three: Launch Entrepreneurship
May to August 2027
Participants will develop their startup concepts further and prepare to bring their ideas to life.
Progression to later phases depends on participation, completed work, and demonstrated commitment.
Jim Leech Fellowship 2027 Application process
Complete the online application and provide accurate information about your background, idea, and motivation. Since the programme runs online, confirm that your internet connection and device can support regular participation.
