Jane Street Graduate Research Fellowship 2027, full tuition plus a US$50,000 stipend for PhD students in CS, maths, physics and statistics, deadline 13 November 2026 Closes 13 Nov

Are you doing a PhD in computer science, electrical engineering, mathematics, physics or statistics, or starting one in 2027? Jane Street, the global quantitative trading firm, is accepting applications for its Graduate Research Fellowship (GRF) 2027. Winners get full tuition and fees for a year plus a US$50,000 stipend, and finalists who don’t win still receive US$5,000. International students are encouraged to apply. Applications close on 13 November 2026.

About the Fellowship

Jane Street trades on global markets using machine learning, statistics, distributed systems and applied mathematics. Its Graduate Research Fellowship supports outstanding PhD students in related fields, and your research doesn’t need to be about finance or trading. The firm says it wants to back students who show technical excellence, intellectual curiosity and humility.

Benefits

  • Full tuition and fees for the award year
  • US$50,000 stipend (or local-currency equivalent) for living expenses. The stipend is taxable.
  • An expenses-paid visit to a Jane Street office to give a talk on any topic you choose (optional)
  • US$5,000 for finalists
  • Recognition as a fellow of a highly competitive programme

If you already have other funding, you can still apply. Jane Street works with your university, and your total stipend would most likely go up, though not always by the full US$50,000 because of university funding caps.

Eligibility

  • You are a PhD student with at least one year left in your programme, or you have committed to start a PhD in Fall 2027 at a specific university. First-year PhD students can apply.
  • Your field is electrical engineering and computer science, mathematics, physics or statistics, or a closely related area.
  • During the award year, you’ll be a full-time PhD student in good standing at an accredited research institution in the US, Canada, UK, Europe, Australia, New Zealand or Singapore.
  • Any nationality can apply.

Important for African applicants: universities in Africa aren’t on the list. The fellowship suits African students who are already doing a PhD in one of those regions, or who have accepted a PhD offer there for Fall 2027.

Required Documents

  • Your CV or resume
  • A research statement explaining your research or proposed direction, written for a technically minded reader who isn’t a specialist (1–2 pages suggested)
  • Contact details for your referees. Jane Street emails them directly, and letters are due by 1 December 2026.

Tips for a Strong Application

  • Write for a smart non-specialist. Explain your problem, why it matters and your approach without heavy jargon.
  • Show depth and curiosity. Highlight results, papers, open-source work or competition achievements (maths olympiads and programming contests count).
  • Brief your referees now. Tell them to expect an email from Jane Street and that letters are due by 1 December.
  • Apply even if your field is “adjacent”. Jane Street says it treats the listed fields as a broad umbrella.
  • Mind the time zone. “Anywhere on Earth” means the deadline ends at midday GMT on 14 November, but don’t wait until then.

How to Apply

  1. Read the full details on Jane Street’s Graduate Research Fellowship page.
  2. Prepare your CV and research statement.
  3. Submit the online application with your referees’ contact details by 13 November 2026.
  4. Make sure your referees send their letters by 1 December 2026.
