This Privacy Policy explains how OpportunityLab (opportunitylab.net, “we”, “us”) collects, uses and shares information when you visit our website. OpportunityLab is run by FutureLabs Africa, based in Akwa Ibom, Nigeria, which is responsible for your personal data. Questions? Email [email protected].
Information we collect
Information you give us. When you email us, sign up for updates through a form or pop-up on our site, or leave a comment where comments are open, we receive what you provide, such as your name, email address and message.
Information collected automatically. When you visit, our website, hosting and the services below automatically receive technical information: your IP address, browser and device type, the pages you view, how you arrived at our site, and approximate location derived from your IP address. Much of this is collected through cookies and similar technologies.
Cookies and similar technologies
Cookies are small files stored on your device. We and our partners use them to keep the site working and secure, to understand how visitors use it, and to show advertising. You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings; some features may not work without them.
Advertising, including Google AdSense
OpportunityLab is free because it is supported by advertising. We use Google AdSense and may work with other advertising partners.
- Third-party vendors, including Google, use cookies to serve ads based on your prior visits to this website and other websites.
- Google’s use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads to you based on your visits to this site and/or other sites on the internet.
- You can opt out of personalised advertising by visiting Google Ads Settings. You can also opt out of some third-party vendors’ use of cookies for personalised advertising at www.aboutads.info or, in Europe, www.youronlinechoices.eu.
- Learn how Google uses information from sites that use its services.
- Visitors in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom and Switzerland are asked for consent before personalised advertising cookies are used, through a consent message on our site.
Analytics and other services we use
We use these services to run, measure and improve the website. Each processes data under its own privacy policy:
- Google Analytics and Google Tag Manager (Google LLC), to understand how visitors use the site. Google Privacy Policy.
- Jetpack (Automattic), for site statistics, security and performance. Automattic Privacy Policy.
- Shareaholic, for share buttons and related content. Shareaholic Privacy Policy.
- OptinMonster, for sign-up forms and pop-ups, when shown. OptinMonster Privacy Policy.
- Advertising partners, as described above.
- Cloudflare and our hosting provider, which deliver and protect the website and keep standard server logs, including IP addresses.
How we use information
- To publish and improve OpportunityLab and fix problems.
- To reply to your messages and send updates you asked for.
- To understand which content is useful, through aggregated statistics.
- To show advertising that keeps the site free.
- To protect the site against spam, fraud and abuse, and to meet legal obligations.
We rely on your consent (for example for newsletters and, where required, advertising cookies), on our legitimate interest in running and funding a free website, and on legal obligations, as permitted by the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023 and, for visitors in Europe, the GDPR. We do not sell your personal information.
International transfers
Our service providers may process data outside Nigeria, including in the United States and the European Union. We use providers that protect personal data with appropriate safeguards.
How long we keep information
We keep emails and messages for as long as needed to respond and follow up, and newsletter details until you unsubscribe. Analytics and advertising partners keep data according to their own policies; for example, you can control Google’s retention in your Google account settings.
Your rights
You can ask us for a copy of the personal data we hold about you, to correct or delete it, to stop or restrict its use, or to withdraw consent at any time. Email [email protected]; we will respond within 30 days. If you are in Nigeria you can also complain to the Nigeria Data Protection Commission; if you are in Europe, to your local data protection authority.
Children
OpportunityLab is a general-audience website and is not directed at children under 13. Some opportunities we list are for secondary school students; if you are under 18, ask a parent or guardian to help you apply. If you believe a child has sent us personal data, contact us and we will delete it.
Links to other websites
Our posts link to organisers’ websites and application forms. Those sites have their own privacy policies, and we are not responsible for how they handle your information.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy as our website or the law changes. The date at the top shows when it last changed.
