HKU Global South Fellowship Scheme 2026/27: Funded 1–3 Month Research Visits to Hong Kong for Academics

HKU Global South Fellowship Scheme 2026/27 flyer, deadline 22 November 2026 Closes 22 Nov

Are you a lecturer or professor at a university in Africa or elsewhere in the Global South? The University of Hong Kong (HKU) Faculty of Social Sciences is accepting applications for the second round of its Global South Fellowship Scheme 2026/27. Fellows spend one to three months at HKU working with a host academic, with flights, a daily allowance and visa fees paid. The deadline is 22 November 2026 (Hong Kong time).

Important: this is for academic staff — Assistant Professor (or equivalent lecturer rank) and above — not for students. You must also get written agreement from an HKU host before applying.

Key Details

  • Host: Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Hong Kong
  • Places: up to 10 fellows per academic year
  • Length: 1–3 months
  • Visits from: March 2027 onwards (spring semester runs February–June)
  • Results: by the end of December 2026
  • Deadline: 22 November 2026, Hong Kong time (UTC+8)

Benefits

  • return economy airfare reimbursed up to HK$10,000 (about US$1,280)
  • a daily allowance of HK$1,500 (about US$190) for the whole stay, including accommodation
  • visa fee reimbursement
  • collaboration with HKU social scientists and access to seminars, lectures and networks

Hong Kong is expensive, and the allowance must cover your rent. Any other costs are your responsibility, so budget carefully.

Eligibility

  • hold a professoriate position (Assistant Professor or above) at a university or similar institution in the Global South
  • a solid research record in a social sciences field
  • written consent from an HKU Faculty of Social Sciences academic (Assistant Professor or above) to host you

Preference goes to junior scholars who can build long-term collaborations with HKU.

What Fellows Must Deliver

  • collaborate with your host on research
  • aim for at least one co-authored publication within a year of the visit
  • take part in seminars, lectures, student training and exchange events
  • submit a completion report within three months of leaving

How to Apply

  1. Find an HKU Faculty of Social Sciences academic whose research matches yours — HKU publishes a list of staff willing to host.
  2. Email them with the subject line “HKU FoSS Global South Fellowship Scheme” and propose a joint project.
  3. Get their written consent; applications without it are not processed.
  4. Complete the online application via the official Global South Fellowship page before 22 November 2026.

Questions: [email protected]. Background: HKU announcement of the scheme.

Next rounds (indicative): HKU says the fall-semester call usually opens in March with a deadline at the end of April, and the spring call opens in August with a deadline at the end of September. If you miss this round, plan for those.

Tips

  • Contact potential hosts now — getting a reply and consent can take weeks.
  • Propose a concrete joint paper with a clear African or Global South angle.
  • Junior lecturers: highlight how the collaboration can continue after the visit.
