The SafeTech Africa HackLab 2026 invites young African innovators to design solutions for safer communities and digital spaces. The challenge supports youth-led ideas that address technology-facilitated violence, child marriage, female genital mutilation, and anti-rights misinformation.

However, UNFPA leads the initiative with the Spotlight Initiative Africa Regional Programme, the Global Programme to End Child Marriage, the African Union Innovation Lab, UNDP, UNICEF, and UN Women.

The challenge offers more than prize money. It also gives innovators access to guidance, visibility, and networks that can help them improve and grow their ideas.

Selected finalists and winners can receive:

  • Virtual mentorship through the UNFPA Social Innovation Toolkit.
  • Pitch coaching before the final showcase.
  • A chance to present at the YouthConnekt Africa Summit in November 2026.
  • Seed grants of USD 5,000 to USD 10,000 for four winners.
  • Access to investors, venture funds, and development partners.
  • Continental media visibility through UNFPA, the Spotlight Initiative, and African Union channels.
  • Support to develop a 12-month implementation plan.
  • Opportunities to connect with other youth innovators across Africa.

SafeTech Africa HackLab 2026 Eligibility

The challenge welcomes:

  • Young African innovators aged 18 to 35.
  • Social entrepreneurs.
  • Digital rights advocates.
  • Youth-led teams and community innovators.
  • Applicants developing practical solutions for African communities.

Also, your idea must address at least one of the three official themes. In addition, your solution should consider privacy, safety, inclusion, disability access, and low-connectivity settings.

Applicants must choose one theme.

Safe physical and community spaces

This theme supports tools that protect people from child marriage, female genital mutilation, and community-based gender-based violence.

Possible ideas include:

  • SMS, USSD, or mobile early-warning systems.
  • Referral tools linking girls to shelters, health services, and legal aid.
  • Digital platforms that support school retention.
  • Community dialogue tools for men, boys, traditional leaders, and religious leaders.
  • Youth-led safe-space and referral networks.

Safe informational spaces

This theme focuses on accurate and confidential health information. It welcomes solutions that improve access to comprehensive sexuality education and sexual and reproductive health information.

Possible ideas include:

  • Youth-friendly chatbots and messaging tools.
  • USSD systems that provide confidential information.
  • Digital learning hubs for rural and out-of-school youth.
  • Accessible platforms for young people with disabilities.
  • Encrypted tools for confidential service booking and referrals.

Safe digital spaces

This theme targets technology-facilitated violence, online harassment, harmful misinformation, and digital censorship.

Possible ideas include:

  • Encrypted reporting systems.
  • Digital self-defence tools.
  • Browser extensions that improve online safety.
  • Media-literacy and counter-narrative platforms.
  • Privacy-focused tools that address harassment and deepfakes.
  • Community-owned publishing and online defence networks.

SafeTech Africa HackLab 2026 selection criteria

Judges will assess entries using several factors. Therefore, applicants should explain both the problem and the practical value of their idea.

The evaluation will consider:

  • Relevance to gender-based violence, child marriage, FGM, or anti-rights narratives.
  • Originality and innovation.
  • Feasibility and business or implementation potential.
  • A clear 12-month plan with milestones.
  • Inclusion of people with disabilities and low digital access.
  • Youth leadership and ownership.
  • Potential to grow from one community to other regions.
  • Data privacy, user safety, safeguarding, and ethical technology.

The application requires:

  • Team lead and member details.
  • Ages, gender composition, nationalities, contact information, and roles.
  • Selection of one challenge theme.
  • A problem statement of no more than 200 words.
  • An innovation description of no more than 700 words.
  • A 12-month implementation roadmap.
  • Expected outputs and milestones.
  • A digital safety and inclusion note.

Furthermore, in your problem statement, identify the affected community, explain the challenge, and show why the problem needs urgent action. Then, describe how your solution works, who will use it, and how it can grow.

SafeTech Africa HackLab 2026 deadline

Submit your application by 18 October 2026 at 23:59 CAT. Shortlisted teams will attend a virtual innovation showcase. The final pitch and award event will take place at the YouthConnekt Africa Summit in November 2026.
