Do you have an idea that could make mining safer, smarter or cleaner? Then this is your chance. The UNDP Africa Pan-African MineTech Exploration Technology Pre-Incubation Programme 2027 is now open. It helps young teams turn real mining problems into working tech solutions. Best of all, you do not need a finished product or a registered company. However, the deadline is very close, so read on and act fast.
About the MineTech Pre-Incubation Programme 2027
The timbuktoo MineTech Hub runs this programme with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). Partners in Botswana, Liberia, Malawi, Nigeria, Zambia and Zimbabwe support it too. Each country has a UniPod, an innovation lab where teams meet and build. The UniPods have shared challenge briefs. These briefs describe real problems in mineral exploration and mining. Your team picks one and shows how technology can solve it.
This is an early-stage track. So, a clear idea is enough to apply. If you followed the UNDP timbuktoo MineTech Startup Incubation Programme 2026, this new call is the step before incubation. In fact, strong teams from this round may move on to full MineTech Hub incubation.
Benefits of the MineTech Pre-Incubation Programme
Selected teams will get:
- Technical mentorship from experts, universities, geological institutions and mining practitioners
- Industry engagement to test whether your solution meets real user needs
- Support to build a prototype at UniPods, MineTech Hub facilities and other innovation spaces
- Business support, including business models, market validation and routes to market
- Networking with mining leaders, researchers, tech experts, investors and innovation groups
Moreover, selected teams can compete for seed funding. This money helps you build a low-fidelity prototype or a proof of concept.
Who Can Apply? Eligibility for the MineTech Programme
You must apply as a team. Your team must:
- Have 2 to 5 members, all aged 18 to 35
- Be based in one of these countries: Botswana, Liberia, Malawi, Nigeria, Zambia or Zimbabwe
- Have all members in the same country, so you can work together at the local UniPod
- Be made up of students, recent graduates, researchers, engineers, technical professionals, innovators or early-stage founders
- Bring skills from at least two fields, such as Computer Science, Data Science, Mining Engineering, Geomatics or Software Engineering
- Have a clear problem in mineral exploration, mining, or a related environmental or operational area, plus a first tech-based idea to solve it
- Define each member’s role and commit to the full programme
- Provide a valid national ID for every member
In addition, female applicants are strongly encouraged to apply.
Application Deadline
The deadline is October 16, 2026. That is very soon. Therefore, gather your team and submit today rather than tomorrow.
How to Apply for the MineTech Pre-Incubation Programme
First, choose a challenge brief from your country’s UniPod. Next, agree on your team members and their roles. Then, write a short, clear summary of the problem and your tech idea. Finally, submit through the official application form. For full details, read the UNDP Africa announcement.
Tips for a Strong Application
- Focus on one real problem. Show who faces it and why it matters.
- Keep your idea simple and practical. Judges want something you can test.
- Show a mix of skills. For example, pair a mining student with a coder.
- Explain how you will use the mentorship and lab access.
