Applications are now open for the 2027 Visiting Fellowship Scheme at the Peter McMullin Centre on Statelessness, Melbourne Law School, University of Melbourne.
The programme offers researchers, practitioners and educators an opportunity to work with the Centre, develop research and build international collaborations.
Most importantly, one funded fellowship is available for research related to statelessness.
Melbourne Visiting Fellowship Funding and Support
The selected fellow can receive up to AUD 6,000.
The funding can help cover:
- International travel
- Accommodation in Melbourne
- Costs related to the fellowship stay
The fellowship has a suggested duration of one to two months. It should take place between August and October 2027.
In addition, the fellow will have access to a workspace, library and computer facilities. They are also expected to take part in the Centre’s activities, workshops and events.
Who Can Apply for the Research Fellowship?
The opportunity is open to a wide range of applicants.
Eligible applicants may include:
- Postdoctoral researchers
- Early-career researchers
- Established academics
- Statelessness practitioners
- Educators
- Other professionals working on relevant research
Furthermore, non-academic professionals can apply if they propose an applied research project that fits the Centre’s work.
Researchers with lived experience of statelessness are strongly encouraged to apply.
What Does the Fellowship Involve?
The successful applicant will conduct research in an area related to statelessness.
During the visit, the fellow will also contribute to the Centre’s academic and public activities.
For example, they will be expected to:
- Present their research at a faculty or public seminar, or work-in-progress meeting.
- Take part in Centre activities and workshops.
- Work with researchers and other members of the Centre.
- Contribute a blog post to the Critical Statelessness Studies blog where appropriate.
As a result, the fellowship provides more than research funding. It also offers opportunities for knowledge sharing and professional networking.
Application Requirements
Applicants must submit one PDF document containing the required materials.
The application should include:
- A curriculum vitae and publication list.
- A research plan of no more than 1,000 words.
- Proposed dates for the visit.
- The amount of funding requested, up to AUD 6,000.
- A budget breakdown, including airfare where needed.
- One letter of reference.
For non-academic applicants, the reference can come from an employer or another organisation with which they have a professional connection.

Applications for the funded 2027 Visiting Fellowship must arrive by:
30 November 2026
Applicants travelling from outside Australia should also note that they are responsible for obtaining and paying for any required visa and insurance costs.
Self-Funded Visiting Researchers
The Centre also accepts applications from people who can fund their own visit.
Unlike the funded fellowship, self-funded visits can be requested throughout the year.
However, applicants still need to provide a CV, research plan, proposed visit dates and a reference or professional letter of support.
