Understanding UN Job Grades
- P and D grades (Professional and Director): Recruited internationally, so candidates of any nationality can usually apply. They normally need a university degree. P-2 is entry level, P-3 mid-level, P-5 senior and D-1 director.
- G grades (General Service): Usually recruited locally. You generally need to live in the duty station, or be eligible to work there, and pass the UN’s administrative support assessment. A high school diploma plus relevant experience is often enough.
- FS grades (Field Service): Support roles in peace and political missions, often in non-family duty stations.
- I-1 (Internships): Short placements, usually unpaid, for current students or recent graduates.
- Contractor roles: Short-term contracts outside the regular staff system.
Benefits of Working with the UN
- Competitive, tax-free salaries for staff positions, plus allowances that depend on grade and duty station
- Health insurance and a pension through the UN Joint Staff Pension Fund for eligible staff
- Generous annual leave and home leave for internationally recruited staff
- Work in a multicultural environment with opportunities to move between duty stations
Eligibility Tips
- Read the “Education” and “Work Experience” sections carefully. The UN screens these strictly, and missing the minimum requirement means automatic rejection.
- Check the language requirements. English is required for most posts, and French or other UN languages are often an advantage.
- For G-level posts, check local recruitment rules. If you do not live in the duty station or have the right to work there, you will usually not be considered.
