Eligibility: What These Programmes Usually Ask For

  • Education: most want current students or recent graduates. UN internships usually ask for a degree from a university listed in the World Higher Education Database.
  • Age limits: some set them, for example FAO (21–30) and UNU (32 or under).
  • Languages: English is essential for most. French or Arabic helps for UN roles in Africa.
  • Location or work rights: graduate programmes like FNB and SageForge need you to be based in that country.

Benefits of Doing an Internship or Graduate Programme

  • Paid experience that turns your degree into real skills
  • A recognised name on your CV, such as the UN, IMF, Microsoft or a major bank
  • Mentoring and a professional network
  • A route to a permanent job, which many graduate programmes offer to top performers

How to Apply: Tips for Success

  1. Apply to several programmes. Most are very competitive.
  2. Tailor each application. Match your CV and motivation letter to the organisation’s work.
  3. Keep your CV to one or two pages, with achievements in bullet points.
  4. Prepare documents early, such as transcripts, proof of enrolment, references and passport.
  5. Beware of scams. Real internships never ask you to pay an application or “processing” fee.
