UN Young Professionals Programme (YPP) 2026: Development and Sustainability Exam, Eligible Countries and How to Apply

UN Young Professionals Programme 2026 Development and Sustainability exam for nationals of 47 participating countries, deadline November 30, 2026 Closes 30 Nov

The United Nations Young Professionals Programme (YPP) 2026 is open. It is the UN Secretariat’s main entry route for young graduates who want a permanent career as international civil servants. This year’s exam is in Development and Sustainability, and applications close on November 30, 2026.

Check this first: the YPP is open only to nationals of 47 participating countries this year. Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya and South Africa are not on the 2026 list. In Africa, only nationals of Angola, Equatorial Guinea, Liberia, Libya and São Tomé and Príncipe can apply. The full list is below.

About the UN Young Professionals Programme

The YPP recruits talented young professionals into entry-level jobs at the P-2 level in the UN Secretariat. It works in two parts: a competitive entrance exam, then professional development for successful candidates once they join the UN. The exam runs once a year, in subject areas chosen according to the UN’s needs. Only countries that are under-represented among UN staff take part, so the country list changes every year.

2026 Exam Area: Development and Sustainability

This year’s single exam area covers economic and social development, environmental protection, population affairs and sustainable development. Relevant degrees include fields such as economics, statistics, social sciences, environmental studies and sustainable development. Check the official job opening for the exact list of accepted subjects.

Benefits of the UN YPP

  • A professional (P-2) job in the UN Secretariat
  • A long-term career path as an international civil servant
  • Structured onboarding and professional development
  • The chance to work at UN offices around the world
  • No application fee

Who Can Apply? Eligibility Requirements

  • Nationality of a participating Member State (see the list below). Only the “Country of Nationality” you enter in your profile counts.
  • At least a bachelor’s degree (or three-year equivalent) in a field relevant to the exam
  • Aged 32 or younger by the end of 2026 (born on or after January 1, 1994)
  • Fluent in English or French (UN Level II in reading, writing, listening and speaking)

Work experience is not required. If more than 90 people from one country apply to the same exam area, the UN ranks them by education level, UN language skills and relevant work experience. Only the top 90 per country go on to the exam, and a maximum of 60 per country move past the first stage.

Participating Countries for YPP 2026

Afghanistan, Andorra, Angola, Antigua and Barbuda, Belize, Brunei Darussalam, China, Cuba, Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, Dominica, Equatorial Guinea, Grenada, Iceland, Indonesia, Israel, Japan, Kiribati, Kuwait, Lao People’s Democratic Republic, Liberia, Libya, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Marshall Islands, Micronesia (Federated States of), Monaco, Mongolia, Nauru, Oman, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Paraguay, Qatar, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, San Marino, Sao Tome and Principe, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Slovenia, Solomon Islands, Timor-Leste, Turkmenistan, Tuvalu, United Arab Emirates, United States of America, Vanuatu.

Tips for a Strong Application
