Applications are open for the CFJ Fellowship 2027 Africa. The programme supports early-career lawyers who want to advance the rights of women and children across Africa.
However, Fellows will complete a paid work placement with a human rights organisation, legal aid clinic, university, or government legal institution. Placements are available in Kenya, Malawi, South Africa, and The Gambia.
CFJ Fellowship 2027 Africa benefits
Successful applicants will receive:
- A paid legal work placement.
- Mentorship from CFJ leaders, supervisors, and regional human rights experts.
- Monthly online training sessions.
- At least one in-person meeting with other Fellows and supervisors.
- Access to lawyers, judges, activists, academics, and other human rights professionals.
- Membership of the CFJ Fellowship Alumni Programme after completion.
- Practical experience in legal aid, advocacy, research, and strategic litigation.
The work focuses on ending violence against women and children. In addition, Fellows will support legal projects that improve access to justice.
CFJ Fellowship 2027 Africa Eligibility criteria
Applicants must:
- Hold a law degree from a recognised institution.
- Have a practising certificate.
- Be admitted to practise law in the country where they seek placement.
- Have up to five years of legal experience after qualification.
- Have the right to work in Kenya, Malawi, South Africa, or The Gambia.
- Speak English fluently.
- Show a strong commitment to human rights and gender justice.
- Be willing to travel when required.
Also, experience in women’s rights, human rights organisations, survivor support, or work with vulnerable communities will strengthen an application.
Fellow responsibilities
Each Fellow will agree on a workplan with Clooney Foundation for Justice and the host organisation. The workplan will include:
- Support for legal research, advice, representation, drafting, or advocacy.
- At least one strategic litigation case with CFJ.
- At least two outreach activities for students.
- Participation in mentoring, training, and networking activities.
Furthermore, Fellows must live in the country where their host organisation operates. Clooney Foundation for Justice does not support international relocation or work-authorisation costs.
