EDGE Fellowship Program 2027 Opens for Conservation Leaders

Applications are now open for the EDGE Fellowship Program 2027–2029, a global conservation initiative that supports early-career environmental leaders working to protect endangered wildlife species and ecosystems.

The 28-month programme helps conservationists gain funding, leadership training, mentorship, and international exposure while leading locally driven environmental projects.

In addition, selected fellows will receive a GBP 15,000 project grant to support conservation work focused on Evolutionarily Distinct and Globally Endangered (EDGE) species.

Why the EDGE Conservation Fellowship Matters

The world continues to face serious biodiversity loss. However, many endangered species receive little attention and limited conservation funding.

Therefore, the EDGE Fellowship Program focuses on protecting overlooked wildlife species that play important roles in maintaining healthy ecosystems.

Moreover, the programme supports local conservation leaders who understand the environmental challenges in their communities. As a result, fellows can create practical and long-term conservation solutions directly within high-biodiversity regions.

The fellowship also strengthens local leadership, scientific knowledge, and environmental advocacy.

EDGE Fellowship Program Benefits

Selected fellows will receive several professional and financial benefits throughout the programme.

GBP 15,000 Conservation Project Grant

Each fellow will receive direct funding of up to GBP 15,000 to implement and expand their wildlife conservation project.

Six Weeks of Intensive Conservation Training

Participants will complete practical training sessions covering:

  • Project planning

EDGE Fellowship Conservation Project Requirements

Applicants must propose projects that focus on eligible species listed on the official 2026 EDGE Species List.

Furthermore, organisers will prioritise projects that focus on higher-priority EDGE species. However, applications involving medium and lower-priority species remain welcome when applicants clearly explain the local conservation importance.

Importantly, species classified as Near Threatened (NT) or Least Concern (LC) in the updated 2026.1 Red List may become ineligible.

Therefore, applicants should carefully review the official species list before submitting an Expression of Interest.

EDGE Conservation Fellowship Application Process

The fellowship uses a two-stage application process.

Step One: Expression of Interest

Applicants must first complete and submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) form.

Step Two: Full Application

After reviewing EOIs, organisers will invite shortlisted candidates to submit a full fellowship application.

In addition, shortlisted applicants may receive further guidance during the selection process.

Who Can Apply for the EDGE Fellowship Program?

The programme seeks passionate conservation leaders from biodiversity-rich regions.

Applicants must:

  • Be nationals or long-term residents of the project country
  • Demonstrate strong community or regional connections
  • Lead projects focused on eligible EDGE species
  • Show commitment to environmental protection and conservation leadership
  • Participate fully in mentorship and training activities

Additionally, the programme prioritises applicants from countries outside the G12 nations, the European Union, New Zealand, and South Korea.

Why Young Conservation Leaders Should Apply

Many local conservationists struggle to access funding, global visibility, and technical support. However, the EDGE Fellowship helps bridge that gap by supporting community-based environmental leadership.

Additionally, fellows gain practical skills that strengthen long-term conservation impact within their countries.

The programme also creates opportunities for networking, collaboration, and international conservation partnerships.

EDGE Fellowship Program Application Deadline

Applicants should submit their Expression of Interest before the official programme deadline stated on the fellowship portal.

Therefore, interested conservationists should begin preparing their project ideas and required documents early.
