The Youth for Biosecurity Initiative began as a Biosecurity Diplomacy Workshop in 2019. Since then, it has evolved into a respected international fellowship that has engaged more than 140 young scientists.
Importantly, the program focuses on emerging leaders from the Global South. Each year, 20 competitively selected fellows participate in an interactive training experience that combines virtual learning with in-person diplomatic engagement in Geneva.
In August 2026, selected fellows will attend the meeting of the Biological Weapons Convention (BWC) Working Group on the Strengthening of the Convention in Geneva. There, they will observe high-level discussions, present collaborative work, and connect with global experts.

Who Can Apply?
Before applying, ensure you meet the eligibility requirements. Applicants must:
- Be under 35 years old at the time of application
- Hold citizenship in a BWC State Party classified as a least developed, low-, lower-middle-, or upper-middle-income country (according to the OECD Development Assistance Committee List)
- Possess an advanced degree in life sciences or a related discipline from a recognized institution.n
- Demonstrate English proficiency at B2 level or higher (CEFR standard), supported by certification.

What Does the Programme Include?
The fellowship runs over three months and balances flexibility with engagement. While the time commitment remains manageable, participants must attend all required activities.
Here’s what the program includes:
✔ Five Interactive Online Webinars
From 3 June to 1 July 2026, fellows will attend weekly two-hour webinars (Wednesdays at 2 pm CET, except the opening session at 3 pm CET). These sessions feature expert discussions, case studies, and interactive exercises.
✔ Scientific Poster Competition Project
During July 2026, fellows collaborate on a scientific poster project. They will present this work at the BWC Working Group meeting in August. This project strengthens teamwork and research communication skills.
✔ Five-Day In-Person Visit to Geneva
From 17 to 21 August 2026, fellows will attend the BWC Working Group meeting in Geneva. Participants must fully commit to the visit. During this time, they will observe diplomatic negotiations, present their posters, and engage directly with international experts.
This blended format ensures both academic depth and diplomatic exposure.
Travel and Financial Support
Successful applicants will receive:
- Economy-class travel tickets
- Daily subsistence allowance during official program dates
However, fellows must secure necessary travel documents, including visas, for Switzerland. Therefore, applicants should prepare early to avoid delays.
