In today’s increasingly globalized world, young leaders must step up to bridge divides and solve complex challenges. That’s exactly where the Obama-Chesky Voyager Scholarship for Public Service comes in. Designed for students who care deeply about their communities, this scholarship helps turn passion into action through education, travel, and leadership development.
What Is the Voyager Scholarship?
The Voyager Scholarship is a two-year leadership development and financial aid program created by President Barack Obama, Michelle Obama, and Brian Chesky, Co-Founder and CEO of Airbnb. Together, they share a strong belief: exposure to new places and experiences builds empathy, understanding, and cooperation. As a result, these qualities empower the next generation to create meaningful and lasting change.
Rather than focusing solely on academics, the program seeks students who actively serve others, build community, and think boldly about the future of public service. In short, it supports students who want to lead with purpose.
Eligibility Requirements
The Voyager Scholarship is open to undergraduate students who meet the following criteria:
- Currently enrolled in a U.S. college or university
- Entering their third year of undergraduate study at the time of selection
- Demonstrate a strong commitment to public service
- Have experience in community service, advocacy, organizing, or innovative problem-solving
- Show curiosity about the world and a desire to create positive change beyond their immediate community
- Actively work toward impact rather than simply discussing it
Students who meet these eligibility requirements are strongly encouraged to apply and take the next step toward a purpose-driven career in public service.
A Program Built for Growth and Impact
Over two years, Voyagers take part in leadership programming that strengthens their values, sharpens their leadership skills, and deepens their commitment to public service careers. Throughout the journey, students connect with peers, mentors, and experienced leaders who help guide their growth.
At the same time, the program encourages students to explore unfamiliar communities and perspectives. By doing so, Voyagers learn how to build bridges across differences and lead with empathy.
Scholarship Benefits That Remove Barriers
The Voyager Scholarship removes financial and experiential barriers so students can fully focus on service. Here’s what the program offers:
- Up to $50,000 in financial aid
Students receive up to $25,000 per year during their junior and senior years. This support reduces student debt and opens the door to public service careers that may not offer high salaries at the start. - Summer Voyage experience
Between junior and senior year, students receive a $10,000 stipend and free Airbnb housing to design their own work-travel experience. This hands-on journey allows Voyagers to gain real-world experience while exploring new communities. - 10-year travel stipend
After graduation, Voyagers receive $2,000 in Airbnb travel credit each year for 10 years, totaling $20,000. This benefit helps alumni continue learning, connecting, and growing throughout their careers. - Fall Summit and leadership convenings
During junior year, students may attend an in-person summit focused on community building, leadership development, and learning from public service leaders. - A lifelong network of leaders
Voyagers gain access to speaker series, mentors, and the global Obama Foundation alumni network. Long after graduation, this community continues to offer support, resources, and inspiration.
