Plastic pollution is more than an environmental problem — it’s a national development crisis. Nigeria generates over 2.5 million tonnes of plastic waste annually, yet less than 10% gets recycled. The rest ends up in waterways, landfills, or streets, contributing to urban flooding, poor health, and infrastructure decay. For instance, Lagos experiences flood losses of up to $4 billion annually due to blocked drainage caused by plastic waste.
At the same time, the plastic economy offers untapped potential. According to UNIDO’s 2021 report, Nigeria’s grassroots plastic pollution value chain holds significant opportunities for innovation, from recycling and eco-design to circular business models. What’s needed now is local, people-powered solutions that tackle pollution while driving jobs, inclusion, and resilience.

GPIP is calling on youth-led ventures, Nigerian grassroots plastic pollution innovators, not-for-profit groups, and local changemakers to bring bold, user-centered ideas to life. Whether you’re developing biodegradable materials, launching a reuse initiative, redesigning packaging, or building tech tools to track waste, your idea matters.
Selected projects addressing Nigeria’s grassroots plastic pollution will receive funding ranging from $10,000 to $20,000, along with technical support, mentorship, and international visibility.
