If so, the Obermann International Fellowships (OIF) at the University of Iowa present an exciting opportunity. These prestigious fellowships invite global researchers to spend a semester on campus, where they can advance their academic projects while participating in vibrant scholarly exchange.

Previously, in Spring 2025, fellows from Nigeria, Kosovo, Germany, Mexico, and South Africa enriched the program with diverse perspectives, enhancing academic dialogue and fostering international partnerships. Now, the call is open once again for Spring 2026. Importantly, applications must be submitted by October 24, 2025.

What the Fellowship Offers

Selected fellows of Obermann International Fellowships 2026 will benefit from a supportive and resource-rich environment. Specifically, the fellowship provides:

  • A $2,000 stipend to offset travel and lodging expenses

  • University of Iowa health insurance throughout the fellowship period

  • Office space and temporary academic affiliation

  • Full access to UI resources, including libraries, research seminars, and campus events

  • An official invitation letter to support visa applications

  • Opportunities to build scholarly networks, attend lectures, and connect with faculty.

However, it is important to note that the fellowship is only partially funded. Therefore, applicants are encouraged to obtain additional financial support from their home institutions.

Eligibility Criteria

To qualify for the Obermann International Fellowships 2026, applicants must:

  • Be active researchers or artists affiliated with an accredited institution outside the U.S., or be independent scholars with a proven academic track record.

  • Conduct work in a discipline that aligns with research areas at the University of Iowa.

  • Demonstrate English proficiency through tests or interviews.

  • Be available to reside in Iowa City for at least two weeks and up to one academic semester (Spring 2026: January 20 – May 8, 2026)

  • Submit a compelling research proposal, including a clear rationale for pursuing the project at the University of Iowa.

Ultimately, this fellowship aims to foster global research partnerships and enrich the University of Iowa’s academic community.

Each year, up to eight fellowships are granted. Applications are reviewed by the Obermann Center and its advisory board, with a focus on the relevance and impact of proposed research.
