Are you a PhD student or early-career researcher passionate about African Studies? Here’s a golden opportunity you shouldn’t miss. The Council for the Development of Social Science Research in Africa (CODESRIA), in partnership with the Centre for African Studies in Basel (ZASB), has officially announced the 7th CODESRIA/ZASB Summer School in African Studies and Area Studies in Africa.
Why This Summer School Matters
This year’s theme, “Honouring Mudimbe: Rethinking Research through African Thought,” invites scholars to go beyond traditional research boundaries. Instead of simply studying Africa, participants will actively explore how African perspectives can reshape global knowledge systems.
Moreover, the programme creates a strong platform for interdisciplinary collaboration. As a result, you’ll gain fresh insights into how African epistemologies can influence research methods across various fields.
What You’ll Gain
Participants will benefit in several impactful ways:
- Engage with leading scholars who guide discussions on theory, methodology, and African thought
- Strengthen your research approach using African-centred perspectives
- Join a vibrant academic community focused on innovative scholarship
- Enhance your academic and policy relevance through practical discussions
In addition, the Summer School encourages you to rethink how your work contributes to real societal change across Africa and beyond.
A Tribute to Mudimbe’s Legacy
Importantly, this edition honours the legacy of Valentin-Yves Mudimbe, a pioneer in African philosophy and critical thought. His work challenged colonial knowledge systems and opened new ways of understanding Africa.
Therefore, this Summer School goes a step further. It not only reflects on his ideas but also challenges participants to create new concepts, theories, and research tools rooted in African thought.
